Private
House, Cleveden Drive, Glasgow
This
project for a professional couple, whose children had
grown up and left home, consisted of two parts – the
refurbishment and separation of the main house from
the back leg of the building and the conversion of this
rear portion into a self-contained 2 bedroom mews flat.
The project for the mews flat required the greater design
ingenuity. The economics of the exercise called for
maximum space usage at the same time as making the space
feel generous and suitably upmarket. This was achieved
by utilising the brightness and spaciousness of the
living room upstairs and connecting this via glass doors
and a double height space to a main circulation route
downstairs. The downstairs circulation was then organised
as a section of corridor subtly expanded and curved
to create a play space, linked with glass doors opening
directly into the kitchen and study bedroom, and the
window beyond. This axis of ground floor space creates
a single but subtly articulated semi open plan family
living area.
