This sculpture used to sit in the middle of Picardy Place in Edinburgh looking super hi-tech back in the 1970s.
Amazing that it’s so hard to remember when it stopped being there anymore

Better Library and Learning Space

Better library imagecrop

haa design friend and collaborator Les Watson has recently published a compilation of articles about the design of libraries and learning spaces and we were pleased to be invited to author two chapters.

The book comprises three sections, Part 1 – projects and Trends looking at relevant examples from all over the world.  Part 2 Trends and Ideas is concerned with current thinking on the design of libraries and looks at the main influences in terms of technology , space use and planning and Part 3 Ideas and Futures imagines a way forward for libraries with contributions by educators, academics and designers.

The first of our two chapters describes some recent case studies from China and examines some of the trends coming out of this massively expanding university landscape.  The second explores how the enduring aspects of learning in a library context fit into the rapidly changing requirements for new learning spaces.

‘Better Library and Learning Space’, Facet Publishing is available from  the RIBA bookshop:
