“I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” (Tom Waits)

When I’m lyin’ in my bed at night
I don’t wanna grow up
Nothin’ ever seems to turn out right
I don’t wanna grow up
How do you move in a world of fog
That’s always changing things
Makes me wish that I could be a dog
When I see the price that you pay
I don’t wanna grow up
I don’t ever wanna be that way
I don’t wanna grow up

Relevance?

Let’s look at the first two lines again.

When I’m lyin’ in my bed at night
I don’t wanna grow up

Tom Waits is, for some, a complete genius. I personally find his voice a bit too much of an acquired taste, so can quite gladly turn to a different channel when he comes on the radio. However, he equates ‘bed’ with ‘night’ – as most of us do – so that’s fine with me.

Sleep should happen at home, at night and in your own bed. (There are some exceptions obviously). Sleep should not happen at work. Sorry, but I just don’t buy in to this whole concept of taking a nap at work.

If you eat healthily, get enough exercise and have an adequate supply of fresh air in your workplace you should not need to sleep during the normal working day. Couple that with managing your time and workload properly and also switching technology off and sleep pods should be consigned to the dustbin of history.

If staff are sleeping on the job then tackle the problem, don’t offer a solution. Sleep pods take up space and space is always at a premium.

End of story. Rant over.
