Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow

practical and imaginative wayfinding

Working in collaboration with Graphical House and Artist, Rachel Mimiec, a wayfinding strategy was developed and has now been implemented in the form of a series of major artworks located throughout the hospital.

The ‘landmark’ installations work in tandem with the directional signage system and are unique elements with which patients, relatives, visitors and staff can engage at different levels depending on their familiarity with the building.

Working with different stakeholders, a set of ‘narratives’ was produced which became the basis of the eventual artworks. At one level these were designed to be purely decorative or practical in acting as landmarks but, by being semi-abstract and being coupled with snatches of text and poetry, they were designed also to be intriguing, providing interest and humanity for those using the building on a more regular basis.
