Newlands Junior College, Glasgow

reworking an industrial space

Newlands Junior College (NJC) delivers alternative educational programmes to young people aged 14 to 16 years old who find it difficult to engage with mainstream education. This is the first enterprise of its kind in Glasgow and haa design was chosen to work on the project due to its experience in creating inspirational educational spaces. The design and fit out of a former industrial space was completed with a small budget and to a tight deadline.

Small in size, but grand in vision, the client required a mix of learning environments, from more traditional classrooms to informal break out zones. These spaces are all furnished to a high quality, with students encouraged to participate in academic learning as well as vocational training. Flexibility in the design and use of shared spaces was a key requirement for NJC, as student numbers are set increase in coming years.
